Default Strawberries

I have just picked a handful of ripe strawberries but they are very small and not very juicy.
Could it be lack of rain or that they're last year's plants ?

Strawberry plants have a life span of between 3 - 4 years after which the size and quality of the harvest falls off. Year one plants only produce a few strawberries but after that each year the number of strawberries produced increases so the fact that your plants are last years shouldn't affect the strawberries Primrose. It's more likely down to lack of rain as strawberry plants do need watering once the fruits start to form but try not to wet the strawberries as this can lead to disease.
