Not being a cherry expert I have read my books Runnerbean. Cherries start to bear fruit after 3 to 4 years but be sure to buy a self fertile variety like Stella and also make sure it is on a dwarf rooting stock. Cherry trees can grow to over 40 foot but the dwarf rooting stock gives a height of between 7 foot and 10 foot - much easier for netting over to protect against the birds! There is a variety named Compact Stella which is ideal for growing in pots. Fresh cherries will be lovely!
