Can Anyone Name My Apple Tree

I am trying to grow an off-shoot of the old apple tree from my family home. The apple tree collapsed and died last summer but a new piece grew in it's place. I seem to recall my lovely Mum, who also unexpectedly died last summer, saying it was called a ....... Jack. Has anybody heard of a something Jack?

Not aware of any variety called Jack something....... are you sure you do not mean James Grieve. I am concerned that what you may think is a shoot off the old apple tree could be just a shoot off the old stock. Trees are more often than not grafted onto a stock of a different variety so that there is no guarantee that what you have got will be the same as your old tree. Sorry to be the bearer of possibly bad news. Only time will tell.

unless this is fruiting stock and can be grafted onto rooting stock you will not get any fruit and certainly not for 5 or so years better to search for the name via family and get a plant from a heratage site or national collection
