Cool picking rubarb

Hi folks,

what is the latest time that i can pick rubarb ??
i bought some rubarb early this year and also transplanted some from another garden which was given to me by another gardener. It looked in an absolutley terrible state earlier this year and i just left it alone. A few weeks ago i looked in on it by chance and it has grown well and looks really healthy.
i've read to leave the first year and harvest the second year ?? Is this true ??

cheers

as long as you have a few red stems you can try but it is not a good idea to eat after early July as poisons in the leaves start to move back into the stems
