Default Fruit Cage Advice

I've finally given up trying to hold my old fruit cage together, and am now planning to build a custom one from wood and aviary mesh (ie welded square mesh). I obviously want to keep birds out, but let as many insects in as possible. I'm planning 3" posts, with 2"x2" frame for the roof and 2"x1" hangers for the mesh with a 1" x 1/2" welded mesh (my local timber man still works in imperial !).

Has anybody done anything like this before ? Do these sizes sound about right ?

Thanks for any comments

hi dabchick
welcome to the forum.
the frame sounds good, but i think welded aviary mesh is a bit ott.
galvanised chicken wire would do the job and is alot cheaper.

Default Fruit cage

Some one I know uses an unwanted greenhouse frame as the cage and then just puts the fruit netting over and around it. They found the greenhouse in the local freecycle with out the glass. Between two people it is also portable (8x6)
