Default Raspberries

Hi guys. I'm just about to dig a bed on my new allotment in which I'm going to plant some raspberries. One half summer fruiting and the other half autumn ones. My question is how wide shall I dig the bed?

Cheers

I`d say about a metre, plant the canes down the centre. Expect them to "creep " though.

Hi Smeagal, you cut raspberry canes down so that they are about 4 inches from the ground. Summer fruiting varieties should be cut down after the raspberries have finished fruiting and I always cut autumn varieties down in February.

I have wild raspberrys, and blackberrys at the back of my property, and I give them a quick wash with some cold water in a collander after picking. I dont think a quick wipe will remove the possible deer, fox, coyote, stray dog, or cat urine if they decided thats where they wanted to relieve themselves...

Ben. I planted 10 Autumn Bliss canes this time last year. Technically I believe I should not have allowed them to fruit, but could not resist temptation. They were lovely and I recommend them. They are starting to shoot through the soil now and I am hopeful for the coming season. I planted them in a raised bed along with my strawberry plants. Then broke the bank and had a fruit case made. There is so much wild life here that this seemed to be a sensible solution.

You can see a picture of this at Gardening From Scratch for Fruit and Vegetables

Also there is a very good tip there for trouble-free strawberry mats. Hope some of this is of help.

Jo.

Morning all,

I was hoping to grow a few rassberry canes against my 6' fence panel but its only a foot wide from fence to lawn, is there any varity that doesnt need a metre for space?

If i cant grow raspberries here i guess thornless blackberries would be ok?

Regards
Chilli p

Chilli, there`s no reason why you can`t plant them there, just be prepared for suckers to come up in the lawn. Just keep them mown down and you should be fine.

Thank you for that, i did wonder about shoots coming up in the lawn i might give that a mis and grow BEANS instead, iv still got that other area to sort out and its all starting to grow

But had a re think of another area in garden that is sort of laid to lawn and wouldn't take much to rotavate & add manure in front of the back of our garage, if that makes sence, my plan was to grow blackberries up the back of garage as there is trellis already there, Rassberries in front of them and 2 blackcurrent bushes in front of them, then some how net well, as my black birds eat everything even my toms last year outside and inside the greenhouse, i managed to eat 2 strawberrys.

Would this plan work

Regards

The raspberries would do better with the support of trellis as well as the blackberry. No problem under planting both with blackcurrants as long as the are at least a couple of feet away.

Hi
I have planted autumn fruiting rasps this spring.
I cut them down to 9" as it said in the instructions.
Now the new shoots on these stems are flowering.
Should I take the flowers off and wait for shoots from the ground?
TIA

No, leave them alone Gill. Those leaves are making energy for the plant to produce the next fruiting stems.
