Default rhubarb querry

i planted some given rhubarb earlier this year, in a large tub, and i know i cant take any stalks from it in it's first year. theres a bit of a problem though; it has done so well that it is getting too big for it's tub. so my question is, can i take some of the root from it, to rehome? will this set the entire plant back for a further year, or will the part that stays in situ be ok, whilst i have to wait a year to use the rehomed part? and should i wait til autumn to do this? or is it best to leave it til end of next year? it is not tub- bound, but has grown very vigorously indeed. ( i am having to hold myself back from picking any!

Hi Lilith, go on.....pull some stalks! I always have done and it has never set the rhubarb back. But, you shouldn't pull rhubarb after June 24th as the oxalic acid in the leaves starts to travel down the stems. You need to wait until the crown is at least 4 years old before splitting it and if the tub is large the rhubarb should be fine. It does have extremely large leaves that makes it look huge. If you are concerned that the tub might not be large enough then put your hand into the compost and feel to see if the roots are touching the sides. Enjoy your rhubarb crumble!

Hiya, pulling rhubarb stalks in the first year is supposed to weaken the plant - but if the plant looks healthy I have always pulled a few.

Hiya, yes you just leave the rhubarb plant alone at the end of each season and the plant just dies down but quickly starts to regrow the following spring.
