Default Apple rootstock grafting

I am trying to get a friend interested in gardening. He is not the hands on type. But he would be interested in planting about four fruit trees. The problem is that this might be upwards of £70.

So how difficult can it be for me to give him some trees for free ?

I know that apple seeds do not give the varieties they came from. I know what a scion and a rootstock is, but is a grafted tree always necessary?

He does not care if he ends up with a 16 foot Bramley like me. I have taken two scions from my Bramley {july], I have wet the wounded ends and dipped them in rooting powder, and placed them in good growbag compost. Are they likely to take, and will they give Bramley apples one day ?

If they take, I think they will give Bramley apples.

I don't think any fruit tree is straight forward without proper grafting.
