Unfortunately split tomatoes is down to too much water, loads of rain on outdoor plants, following dry days (which we can't do anything about) and erratic watering. Tomato plants need a regular watering programme so that the plants don't dry out and then get a good watering which will cause the fruits to split.

Sorry for the misinformation Richard

I thought the tomato's was over ripe and thats why they split

Interesting post Lesley, i'd say i'm in the 'erratic watering bracket'

This year has been our best year and yeah, we are more careful with watering ( with the minor mishap )

Hi Matt, it's really annoying when we get a deluge of rain and the outdoor tomatoes split, because there is nothing we can do to stop it happening! I'm sure you will soon get a watering routine sorted - tomato plants are really fussy devils!

We've had a bad year here for tom splits due to all the rain early and large amounts of rain at one time. I've only had to water 3 times all year. I've been picking the them when thy're still a bit green and then letting them ripen in the window sill. There isn't much difference in taste and I don't have the waste from splits. There are different varieties that are more resistant to spliting but I tend to go for what tastes good to me, and just know that I may have to deal with the splits later.

Some of my gardeners' delight have split. Doesn't matter, pick them before disease gets in, tastes just as good, and straight into a dressed tomato salad. None wasted.

This is the first decent Summer (ex Aug) we have had for at least four years for outdoor toms in the south of England. I just haven't bothered; the risk of blight with incessant rain and lack of sun. Just not worth it.

Even so there is a slight sign of blight, but this week and hopefully next seems to have arrested it in its tracks.
