Question Has anyone grown Patio Fruit trees?

Whilst glancing through this years Sutton cataloge I noticed some fruit trees for growing in pots on the patio.
I was wondering if anyone has grown them an what results they obtained.
I have a south facing garden and live on the south coast.

Well

I believe there a few which are suited to pots and patios, although I suspect these are the ones which if let loose would over take your garden.

Brown Turkey Figs are worth and try and they do well in the UK. Its best potting them to restrict the roots, which in turn means they will put more effort into growing and bearing fruit.

Kiwi's may be worth trying, but to be hnonest I don't know! (they can grow up to 3m a year!)

Good luck

Regards

Paul

there seem to be two 2 ways to make a fruit tree smaller. firstly, selective breeding has drastically reduceced the size of fruit trees over the years, apple trees used be a good 20-30 ft and cherries used to be 60-70 ft secondly, growth can be restriced by limiting the size of container used. bonsai trees are just normal trees grown in a small pot (bonsai means small pot)

Sorry I didn't make myself clear.
These are ready potted and grafted.
What I was asking was if anyone had grown any of the plants and was trying to find out any pitfalls.
They are quite expensive it they don't grow and produce fruits.

Friends of mine have tried different patio fruit trees over the years. They have given up on the cropped ones, which have the fruit growing of the main stem.
They also ended up buying them from a local nursery, so they could see the quality when they bought them.

Hope that helps

I haven't done so yet, but I've done the same as you smeagal whilst looking through the suttons catalogue!

So I've bought one of the Redlove apple trees, and I intend to grow it in a pot! It arrived the other so just need to pot it and let it grow (fingers crossed)! I'll keep you posted how I get on.

I was looking at fruit trees but the price was a bit of a put off . I then got a tip that pound strecher had some for £5.99 They didnt look very healthy but they have been planted for about three weeks now and are starting to shoot
I got plum , apple , pear and cherry cheaper than one tree from the garden centre .

You need to select dwarf or semi-dwarf varieties of fruit trees to pot in containers for patio garden.
