thanks for the replies folks, I was just wondering how to grow them from seed. I have had a couple of my regular customers ask me for them, and was just a bit clueless

growing from seed always seemed pointless to me, unless you plan on trying to create a new cultivar, just propagate them from the runners of existing plants.

iv tried both from seed and from shop bought plants - you can pick them up cheap

i just sprinkled seeds over trays, picked them out and potted on, i have these now in a strawberry planter but it has seen better days now

i started my strawberry bed out 3 years ago, i planted 6 plants which shot out sideshoots/runners everywhere but only got 10 or so strawberries - i pegged the strawberry shoots down with clothes pegs and new plants formed -

this year the patch is completely covered in flowers, its going to be a really big crop

Hey not so fast. You can get many more varieties from seeds. Shops tend to have the most popular or cheapest they can get hold of. Lots of seed shops online for every type of strawberry you could think of. Get some seeds suited to your conditions. I have just transplanted my alpine strawbs into raised bed. Very small sweet fruit. Had them a while back in pots inside. Wonderful taste. They are doing much better outside and looking forward to strawbs and ice-cream soon. Why not do both seeds and plants and see what you prefer. I used the peat pots (or rather they were the non peat type). Soaked them in water to expand. I put 3 seeds in each, put them on the windowsill inside and waited 3 weeks. I had a really good success rate. I transplanted them outside about two weeks ago and they are doing really well. Good luck.

Ive recently started wild strawberries from seed, they look like they will be more of a bush than regular strawberry plants. I just germinated them like any other plant and will transplant them when they get a bit bigger (they're still pretty small!)

I started growing strawberries six years ago after being given a couple of plants. I now have two beds (16ft x 4 ft) and two planters full of them - and I have thinned them out drastically for the last three years and given many new young plants away - so with just a few new plants you can get some fantastic harvests in a very short time.

I haven't had the opportunity to grow strawberries from seeds. Starter plants are easier and quicker. I'm sure it can be done; I just prefer not to go through the hassle.
