Hi guys. Sorry if this is in the wrong place but i need some advice.
We moved into our house in Feb this year and quickly discovered an apple tree (and lots of other veggies growing out of the lawn lol). But today i discovered that the other tree in our garden is another fruit tree, i think it may be a plum tree. Anyways the tree is over run with ivy and i would love to get rid of that ivy so the tree can thrive better. I have attatched some pictures so you can see how much the ivy has taken over, and to help me conirm that it is a plum tree. I would be soo grateful of any help and advice. Thanks in advance ![]() Tree DSCF0006.JPG - 4shared.com - photo sharing - download image DSCF0008.JPG - 4shared.com - photo sharing - download image DSCF0012.JPG - 4shared.com - photo sharing - download image DSCF0013.JPG - 4shared.com - photo sharing - download image |

i agree, sever it low down and remove 3-4" of the ivy stem.dont try and pull it free from the tree.no need and you may damage the tree itself.if you get any regrowth from the lower ivy stem a shot of Gallup or any other glyphosate will eventually kill the roots off.
infact looking at the pics id get some glypho onto the ivy now so it can be well absorbed by the ivy.any probs regarding spaying just use a 2" paint brush to coat as many leaves as possible.2 hits 4 weeks apart and you will have really weakened it,then go for the cut. Try to remove its root system as much as possible.Cut the stems of the ivy to kill all of the plant above the cut. Leave the dying ivy for a month or so that it becomes dehydrated, it will then be much easier to pull from the tree with out removing bark and harming the tree.

We had ivy on our apple tree when we moved in. My husband cut it all back by hand. The apple tree rewarded us with loads of apples.
