Default What fruit

I want to grow some fruit in my garden. It is only a small yard and I am currently growing stuff in pots and a large planter that looks like an old pond (someone lovely gave it to us). I want something that is really easy to grow and very strong but doesn't take up to much room that can be grown in a tub outside preferably. Also I am doing my gardening on a shoestring budget, so I want something that doesn't cost too much. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance

Blueberries. I love them!!

You can buy blueberry plants which are suitable for growing in a pot in most garden centres (usually only a few pounds a plant).

You will get a good crop of blueberries in the second year and maybe even get some the first year if its pretty warm in your area.

Redcurrants, blackcurrants and cranberries are also great

Thanks

Hi Violet - if you want to grow a few fruit bushes, try looking in your local Lidl or Wilkinsons - they usually have special offers on, with really cheap, but good bushes, and fruit trees as well!

Thanx Adam and Dexterdog.
I love blueberries too but never thaught of growing them, so that sounds really great. They are so expensive in the supermarket and even in the local greengrocers it's around ?1.99 for a very small tub, so I'll definitely look into this one.
I don't really shop in lidl or wilkinsons as they are not local enough for me to get to (can't drive...yet!) We have just had a new Aldi open, thats supposed to be a bit like lidl isn't it? So I'll keep my eyes peeled when in there.
I looked in my local ?stretcher earlier and there are lots of things in there very cheap, including a thorn free blackberry bush and loads of gardening aids. I think I'm gonna try and draw a plan tomorrow, there is so much I want to do now lol.

Aldi is also great for fruit bushes and trees. I think they are about ?1.99 but they only sell them a few times a year so you will have to keep your eyes open to see when they are in stock

Thanks

Hi Violet! Welcome to our forum! I have heard good reports about the fruit bushes and trees from Aldi - Lidl and Woolies sell them aswell. It is really the wrong time of the year to be planting bare rooted fruit bushes. November onwards is the best time whilst the plants are dormant. This is also the time when Aldi and Lidl are selling them! They were selling fruit trees in February for only ?3.99 - an absolute bargain!!

Hi Violet, when planting your blueberries remember they like an acid soil so use an ericacious compost or add something to make the soil acid. To save space think what you might grow upwards, a self fertile kiwi, or grape if it is a suntrap, loganberry vines will tolerate a little shade, they fruit on last years growth, harvest in the second year then cut the fruited cane out, new canes grow from the base for next years crop and if you are on a tight budget buy just one cane fruit, new plants can be made by planting the cane tip in soil
and it will root a new plant which you then separate from parent plant once rooted.
