Talking Met Office Weather Warning?

Anybody else had the 50mm of rain yet?
Just saw on our local news (East Anglia) here in Essex a Breaking News report that flooding has already occured in the area, here on the coast close to Harwich and Clacton-on-Sea has got very dark looks almost like night....wonder if I shall wake up to my Onions and Toms floating around on Lilos with a sex on the beach in one hand and a cigar in the other?

Met office online warning is an orange (Be Prepared)... how do you prepare...Should I dish out rain mac's and umberellas to the veggies...lol
Met Office: UK: severe weather warnings
Oh I just heard thunder in the distance....

Talking Update

Well what a nightmare - about 4 minutes after my last post I had taken some pictures of my tunnel and as I went to upload them the power went off. There has been no power all night, am now on a lap top with limited battery life so I shall be brief....lol

The rain eased off by about 10:30pm, my tunnel was flooded on the lower floor area which is about a 8-10 inch step, the outside veggies are also flooded and most of my sweetcorn is underwater...lol I have a pump but have no power to use it - did manage to scoop all the water out of the tunnel but am sure it will re-fill as the ground around the tunnel is wet.....

Sweetcorn completly submerged....

There was one small upside to come out of all this missery....

I found a battery hand held TV I bought back in 1999 so I was able to watch BIG Brother in full colour, although reading the subtitles was difficult...lol

Was fun, different, but the now lack of power and the amount of water is real pain in the backside... Shall have to see whats in store tommorow...

I was very, very lucky yesterday - the storms skirted around Chez Wafflycat on the most part. The one overhead was bigger on noise & flash value than rainfall dropped - although that was enough, thank you! Places only a very few miles away suffered very bad flooding.

Having a stream at the end of the garden is a joy 99.9% of the time, but there is the knowledge that one day we WILL flood... The stream is the upper part of a river system, so whilst it rises quickly it also subsides quickly. On one occasion I have woken up, opened the bedroom curtains and found the view to be the house surrounded by water on two sides - to within half-a-brick of coming in the house. That gives a prespective on what is important in life and it's not 'stuff'.

What an absolutely dreadful night Mark - but terrific commentary, thanks! We were really lucky, although the sky darkened and you could hear thunder, thankfully the storm missed us.

How are the veggies this morning, especially those submerged sweetcorn plants?

Well you know its odd, after posting on here in the early hours, I tried to get to sleep, but I tossed and turned all night worrying aboout the sweetcorn and wondering if by that point it had gone soggy being submerged under all that water and some of the other veggies.
Does make you think really how attached you get to your plants, after all them arriving as seeds via a brown envelope courtesy of suttons and then being planted and watered and then seeing them make there debut appearance etc etc...the amount of time, energy and work that we put into growing something could make it all the more 'conveinient' to pop into your local supermarket and buy it off the shelf....

At this stage I dont know how the corns will react, I think the other veggies will be ok, just let them dry out and Im assuming will be just fine. The power came back on at 11:37am and with that the pump kicked in and the water around the corns has been flushed away into the backwaters. The corns stems seem to be fine at them moment, they seem waxy in touch and stiff so I think they will be ok? They seem very hardy? The leaves also to say been under water are also very stiff, I thought they would be limp and wilted... Anyhow shall end my drama with a few pictures minus the water!!!

The tunnel had re-filled, I dont think with rain but water that drained from the soil that the veggies are sat in and also the grassy area outside the tunnel. The walkway underneath is clay, but used to have plants and bushes either side of the walkway that the JCB dug out the clay and we filled with soil. But the area did tend to get a bit soggy when it rained heavily, so a hole was dug into the clay in the hope it would fill the hole rather than the walkway in the tunnel, of which since february I have had to empty once with the pump, but the downfall last night was just too much.....

I emptied the hole under the walkway, went for a shower and it had re-filled, the water from the soil was still draining into the hole... all ok now (for the mo)

You know when I opened the thread I didnt think it would happen to me but thought it would of been 'Flooded' with stories from others.... But one thing is for sure, living in a 56ft unit thats 3ft off the ground is a definet bonus

Everything in your polytunnel looks marvellous - you certainly wouldn't think that it had been flooded only last night. If the sweetcorn are growing in clay soil you can always use a garden fork to make air holes which should help with the drainage.

lol - I know, must say though I am sick of the site of water. The top end of the garden nr the tunnel is clay but the bottom half isnt so bad. There is clay when you dig down but quite a way down. My garden does look like marble cake at the mo, will have to scrape away the clay thats landed on my corns, but am baffled as to where it came from? And as to why my garden stinks to high heaven of seawweed is beyond me.... A first in the 6 years I have been on this plot....

It twas an experience

Hopefully your plants recover with no lasting damage, Mark. Flooding is something I would only wish on my worst enemy - it is a horrible sensation to see it happening and knowing that there is absolutely nothing you can do about it.
