Hi as the heading states I'm another newbie not only to the site but to Veg growing. In December last year I was looking at the garden thinking what can I do with it as it the ground has been covered with Tarpaulin and gravel for the past 10 years. I was thinking a bush here flowers there but then I came across a program on my PC that opened up a new avenue ( River Cottage ) It was at that moment I thought lets start making it productive so after convincing my wife to let me use a small part of the garden to grow veg which actually turned into the whole of the garden as it is not very big I got to work converting from a tired garden into hopefully a productive garden.
![]() ![]() Anyway the first pic shows the area for veg I also have areas allong the fence to do runners and also strawberries in pots the second is being used for Raspberries You see a gooseberry bush to the left of the picture and I'm also thinking Blackcurrant? Hope to get loads of support and guidance. Cheers Bill |

Hi Bill, and welcome to a great gardening site. Looks like you're off to a good start with your plot. There are alot of helpful folks here if you have any "?"s. Good luck with the growing.

Thanks for the welcome. I'm looking forwards to getting stuck in and just getting outside. I posted the first two pictures to give an example of the area I have got to work with.
Also got this bit ![]() And this bit ![]() Thinking runners, sprouts onions once I sort it. What do you think? Yes that is a blackberry bush in the second picture its a bit ropy so need advice on how to get it more compact and productive? Bill |

Anything is possible Bill! And you're already thinking in the right direction
You could even use it as a herb garden or put a few fruit bushes in!Is that a wild blackberry? If it is they are very hard to tame as they grow like wildfire! Your best bet with that would be to dig it and get a smaller compact variety, which isn't so vigorous growing but more productive fruiting. A garden centre is a good bet for choice of different varieties to suit. |

Yes it is to be honest it inst doing to well anyway so looking to rip it out anyway will probably do it this weekend.
Just transplanted a Yucca the wife had in a large planter in a spare bit of ground in the front garden so now I have a large empty pot just waiting for a shallow rooting fruit tree or fruit bush any ideas?? |

If the pot is big enough, then there's no reason why you wouldn't be able to put a dwarf fruit tree in there. They can be quite expensive as they've been bred to be short!
Failing that, something like a blueberry bush would do well. However they need special care and attention as they require rich, fertile, acidic soil that contains a fair quanity of organic matter! But other than that they don't need much at all ![]() |

Thats a great plot with a lot of potential, stick with it, the results will be well worth the effort you'll need to put in!
