Default Polytunnel Advise

Good Morning All,

I have been reading your posts for a while now waiting until I had my own veg patch and garden. The moment has finally arrived and my Husband and I moved into our own house two weeks ago (after living in America for several years) with space for growing. I am very excited and plan on growing as much as we can. I would love a polytunnel to extend our season. I know I have missed the early season for 2009 but I would like to grow late into the season this year. There are several different companies suppling tunnels and I do not know where start. I have a few questions and would be very grateful for your help:

1: Good experiences with any companies
2: What do you look for when buying a polytunnel
3: How easy are they to build
4: What features would your ideal poly tunnel have
5: What is the optimum size width, length, height
6: Anything else you can add!

I look forward to reading your replies
Thanks very much
Rozy

Hi Rozy,

We bought our 8' x 6' polytunnel from First Tunnels 6 weeks ago (£295) - worth every penny - it took us a few hours each day for 3/4 days to build & get it up and running,..each steel hoop is dug in 18" & secured with metal anchor plates & clamps, then back filled with soil,..hopefully it will last us a lifetime, with only the polythene to renew through time...

Hey,
At the nursery I work at we re-erected a polytunnel in the late spring. It's one of those huge great big ones but the principle is still the same. It took five of us, a tractor and digger two days to get the main frame and plastic sheeting over.
There are different grades of plastic that let different amounts of light in.
Obviously, good strong footings for the rings are essential and a gradual easing on of the plastic to ensure taughtness (I had hand cramps for days after hanging on to the plastic and pulling hard!). We weighed one side of the loose plastic down with growbags whilst we worked the other side.

We attached shade netting to the bottom metre at the sides, the base of the netting dug into the footings. The hardest part was clamping the plastic down. Washing up liquid smeared into the metal strips helped alot. Any inevitable tears in the plastic can be easily fixed with really strong weave clear tape.

Obvious features that are essential is ventilation and sides/ends that can be rolled up to allow further ventilation. We added the mipex weed suppressent fabric down and after adding spray bars, we have hundreds of tomatoes growing gloriously.

All you need is strength and patience.

Good luck!
