Question Polycarbonate Greenhouse

Does anyone have one of these? Is this good value?

6' x 8' Greenhouse with Polycarbonate. WAS €579 NOW **€492** - lenehans.ie - for all your DIY and Gardening needs

It looks good but I am very worried about the weight of such a greenhouse. will it stay on the ground? Our site is quite windy at times and would hate to have to retreive it from the neighbours garden?

I would appreciate any information you have on the polycarbonate greenhouse. Obviously budgets are restricting me from the glass version.

hi beanybaby
a friend of mine has had his polycarbonate up for about five years without any problems.
just make sure you fix it down properly.
as for value, with the current exchange rate, it seems a bit ott compared to some others..
6 x 8 greenhouse polycarbonate Garden Buildings in Home & Garden online shops - find great deals at BizRate UK!
hope this helps..

Thanks guys. I think I will go for it. I am currently watching one on ebay 8x6 and it is going now for £4-20 Only 6 days or something to go. Perhaps I will get it for under £10. Hilarious, eh?

Hey, I bought one pretty muich the same from Argos. I adore it, never thought I'd get so hooked on GH gardening
We laid slabs and drilled the frame into the slab base for extra anchoring. Unfortunately, the wind blew one of the side panels out, once when it was smei constructed and again when it was complete. The perspex glass cracked and I taped it over until I can replace it.

Apart from that the construction is strong and very impressive.

A word of warning tho....if your future GH is similar to mine, the free staging with the GH had the wrong bolts so I have not yet made it and they missed a part out. They posted it from Norfolk pretty quickly when I rang tho. Also,
the instructions were a nightmare...SO hard to read and we did some of it wrong. There was a picture of an old granny erecting the GH in the manual which made my poor brother (who took days trying to set it up) furious!!

Just make sure you get it anchored in the best location and enjoy.

I used to deliver those garden buildings from Waltons and I got mine from somewhere else, if this helps !!!
If you got the wrong parts and only one peice was missing then think yourself lucky, thats good by their standards.

Hi Susie,
Checked my Argos catalogue and its not in it. Must be in UK brochures only. As I am digging away in the Emerald Isle, I cannot get from Argos. If I can't get on Ebay, I may have to pay the extra and get from the site on my link but I think despite the problems with putting it up it will be worth it. And lets be truthful here, I'm not going to be putting it up now, am I? I will look after the veggies but the building of raised beds and putting up of greenhouses, now they are jobs for Mr Beanybaby.

I've always had metal greenhouses but I moved house recently and bought a polycarbonate jobbie and it's pretty decent. The added bonus being that the kids football won't go crashing through the glass anymore !
I bought an 8x6 Gardman off Ebay for £285.00 brand new ! Got it on Ebay and it came next day which is nice ! It's now got chillies, peppers, spinach and tomatoes in it. Superb !

Bearing in mind that the "traditional" greenhouse has a brick or timber base, usually up to the height of the staging, the modern greenhouses have glass or plastic to ground level. At the end of the season I'm replacing the bottom layer of two of SWMBO's greenhouses with timber.
The local builders merchant cut me some 8x4 sheets of exterior 12mm ply to approx. 2 foot squares and they're perfect to replace the bottom "course" of glazing. Sealant from the local £1 shop fixes them perfectly and they're nearly all painted now with Fencelife ready to go in. The top edge of each can be taped with 2" aluminium tape to prevent water penetration, and if you're not planning to grow at ground level (definitely less backbraking ) it makes an easy fix for timber staging as well. Under storage also means you're not going to break anything if you push it to the back
I reckon the only reason they're glazed to the floor now is cost as the traditional style would be more expensive to produce, but this is a relatively inexpensive and simple fix for that. It also looks pretty neat too.
You could of course go for a more expensive and better look using T&G vertcal boards with a timber top rail but the plywood is an easier option.

SWMBO decided it was now time to develop the "Maternity Unit"

She has a few heated propogators but wanted a "high top" and working on the assumption that she is ALWAYS right, she got one for OUR anniversary

I put together a frame and table for it and along with the others it will be her very own hatching area. I've left room for a water butt inside so the water can get up to temperature in case the "babies" get a chill if the water's too cold.

So here is phase 1 of the Maternity Unit..................................

More to follow............................................ .............

I've also decided to replace the flimsy sliding door with a more substantial hinged one

The "Maternity Unit" all done and ready to go

I "rescued" a 5'-0" fluorescent tube and fitting from the local recycling plant and I'll put in a Sylvana grow tube when wer'e ready for the seeds.

I've also been busy making boidegradable mini pots from old yellow pages so we'll have a good supply when the time comes. You can see them on YouTube

Our Polycarbonate greenhouse has not been that good. Panel blew out in the first bit of wind, so you have to put silicon squirty stuff in the grooves. Having done that, after only 3 years some of the panels have gone brittle for some reason and the others have lost some of their transparency. We wouldn't buy another one. Ours was less than £300.

First post here we go!

I've got a Gardman 8ft x 6ft that I bought in January and for the money it's been tremendous so far. It's powder coated green frame really blends in with the garden and I really like the twin wall polycarbonate for its insulation.

I bought it from Greenhouses UK - All Leading Brand Greenhouses for £285 including delivery and it arrived the next day. There were a few screws missing but they got them to me next day also so well happy.

I've just checked and the price has dropped a bit since I got mine.

8x6 Gardman Greenhouse - Greenhouses UK - All Leading Brand Greenhouses

Word of advice though, do get the base anchors for screwing it down because otherwise you might break a drill bit like I did !
