Lightbulb Our Easy Mini Polytunnel

G'day Folks,
Back in August, when it was time to start growing our early spring crops, I needed some extra room. So I asked my OH, Doc if he could build me a little plastic hot house!

...This is what he made

...go Here for instructions on making it...

...and Here to see it being used.

It has worked so well that I've recently had to put shade cloth over the roof so I can keep using it as the weather (here in Australia) warms up!

Neat job! I like the simple approach to the design. It's always more interesting to find ways of building your own garden structures that are substantially cheaper than buying ready made ones. You're lucky you have such a resourceful and competent OH. Think I'll show the pic to my OH to give him a hint.

Cheers Autumn! Hope the hinting worked!

Summer is here and the temperatures seems to rise more everyday. The little plastic hot house was getting way too hot inside. The thermometer I've put inside only registers to 50C so I've no idea just how hot it was getting.

Earlier in the season I put a cover of shadecloth over the roof leaving the plastic in place.
Now I have removed the front and rear panels of plastic and replaced them with leftover pieces of shadecloth.

Already the temps have dropped to a more bearable level with the flow through of air this now allows.
I can now continue to use this house as a propagating area as well as continuing to grow boxes of Basil that are enjoying the consistent conditions and the bug free environment.

Very well done. Simple, practical, and economical. There is some fine ingenuity displayed in th effort.

Very nicely made, I think if I tried to make one I'd end up finished trapped inside

Doc (Hubby) says a big thank you to all of you who have taken the time to check out the links in this thread.

He wanted to say this personally but didn't wish to join a vegetable growing forum as he's not a gardener...he just cooks all the veg I grow!

I've since removed all the plastic and this little house has become a great little shaded area for my water food garden. I've been growing Water Chestnuts, Arrowhead (Duck Potatoes) Watercress, Kang Kong and Lebanese Watercress all through the very hot summer we had this year.

Hi there Scarecrow! How are things doing - great, I hope!!

A water food garden is certainly different. What do Arrowhead tubers and also Kangkong taste like?
