herbs-use seeds or plants to start

i would like to grow herbs all round but is it best to use seeds or plants ? I always buy the ready grown herbs from the supermarket but i want a variety of herbs dill tarragon basil mint etc

I always buy plants from the garden centre especially herbs like mint where there are so many different varieties and you don't really need 100 seeds. Also rosemary, sage and chives I bought as plants. Basil though I would grow from seed because you need more than one plant on the go at a time.

I also buy most of my herbs from the garden centre. They are usually as cheap or cheaper than a packet of seeds anyway.

Theresa if you want to reply to a private message (PM) simply click on reply at the bottom of the message, write your reply in the window that opens, then click on submit message. Always check the recipient username at the top is actually the correct members name before you send it.

To send a PM to anyone click on the members name and a drop down menu opens. Select 'Send A Private Message To' and a window opens for you to write your message. Once again click on submit message to send it.

Hi Theresa

I use a mixture. Rosemary, Chives, Sage, Bay, Sweet Marjoram, Hyssop were bought as plants, Bronze Fennel planted from seed as increasingly are my lavenders, also now basil, oregano, thyme, new sage plants, borage etc.

French Tarragon cannot be grown from seed so buy a plant. Wonderful for adding to some white wine vinegar.

I know there's always loads of seeds to a packet - but you know - it's sometimes handy to have them - you can always give away the surplus - friends, school fetes etc or even sell them.

It's far easier to find packets of seeds of unusual varieties than it is plants.

Just my thoughts - I've often sold the surplus from my front garden.

For what it's worth, I bought most of my herb garden from the supermarket. They say you shouldn't do this because the plants aren't very good quality. However I had trouble finding herb plants in my garden centre and the supermarket had quite a decent range. The Basil and parsley thrived. The coriander, chives and and thyme are growing but haven't taken off like the others.

I've bought some rosemary from the garden centre and it's doing great.

I'm growing some Oregano from seed and they seem to take ages to germinate and grow. If I could get some as a plant, I would do.

I'd recommend a garden centre, but if they don't have the plants you want, then I'd certainly opt for supermarket plants as a preference over seeds.
