Default Mint - so hard to find!!

has anyone else had a task getting hold of mint seed?

I went to four stores today before I found some seeds.

Appreciate it has a tendency to get a bit wild if left unkept but i wonder why it seems to have limited sellers!

Maybe its just me

Was it the standard mint you wanted, or the different flavoured ones? I have a small collection of mints, apple, pineapple, chocolate etc but have never seen it in seed form apart from peppermint mint.

I've found plenty of mint seeds in Homebase, Finchley Road, but the problem is actually getting them to grow! I am on attempt no. 3 now; first mistake I let them get too hot in the heatwave, second mistake covering the seeds. Third time lucky?!

Why not just buy plants, they are cheap enough?

I bought a mint plant from Morrisons for 79p about 2 weeks ago, used the mint I needed and then repotted it into a large pot and fingers crossed it's doing wonderfully well. I am putting it out in the day and bring it in at night, and eventually it will be an outdoor plant. I figured it needed plenty of aclimatising to the weather as probably been indoors all it's life. Seems to be quite nice and healthy. My garden centre sells them for £1.69 so I thought it was a more economical way to do it, and I needed some mint on that occassion anyway, so didn't buy the fresh packed stuff went for the living plant. If it comes down with a disease or dies when I put it out I will repost

Newtothis, it should be alright outside now as the summer is here, even at night. It might slow a little bit at first, but soon recover.

I haven't seen much in the way of mint seed anywhere wither besides pepermint. It is easier just to buy the plant though and grow it on.

I'm on the hunt for Chocolate Mint, and a lot of people I ask really haven't a clue it even exists. They always think I'm taking the mic.

I still have it in the greenhouse at night, although I was thinking of leaving it outside tonight. It's doing quite well, getting very large very quickly despite a 4 year old constantly munching on it's leaves since I introduced her to the herbs in the garden.....my chives are taking a battering too, as well as my borage flowers.

I did actually see the plants selling at my local garden centre, chocolate mint that is. I had no interest in mint at the time unfortunately as I envisaged it taking over the garden.

I have seen regular mint seed selling in QD and Wilkinson if you have those shops nearby. Probably not chocolate mint seed though. Morrisons also sell mint seeds I believe, well they did last year at any rate I seem to recall.

At the moment we are just picking off random leaves....is there a method to harvesting by the way?

Default Mint Seeds

For anyone wanting mint seeds you can buy them from Thompson & Morgan - but, there are over 1000 seeds in a packet!!

I have found many mint plants here at my local garden centre in Italy. However, the one I have in my kitchen garden comes straight from the ditch and grows in the wild!!! Problem is, it's very invasive!
