Well

I noticed a root of ginger in the cupboard the other month and it must have been there for a while as it had sprouted. So i popped it in a pot and covered it and waterd it. a few weeks later it emerged but since then its done nothing. So i'm thinking its maybe not so easy? Having said that I would advise you still to have a go! Maybe purchase your root stock from a garden center!

you will need to protect it pretty well during the winter, it can just about live outside on the south coast but i think b&q selling rhizomes in scotland might be a bit optomistic

maybe better growing it in a big container that can be stored indoors during the winter.
