I am looking to plant some garlic next month ready for next year. Do I plant from seed or from a bulb from a shop ??

Cheers

Paul it is best to buy the garlic bulbs from one of the seed companies. You really can't guarantee results from using supermarket garlic. Try www.thegarlicfarm.co.uk this is a good place to buy from. The seed companies also sell garlic bulbs. Try www.marshalls-seeds.co.uk or www.thompson-morgan.co.uk I hope these help.

The Garlic Farm on the Isle of Wight is good for the giant garlic, I've grown it from them previously. Brilliant. Happy Gardening!

We got our garlic from here..

http://www.reallygarlicky.co.uk/main2.html

Grew really well over the winter and spring.
Poor crop for us as it rained near harvesting time for the 3 weeks we were on hols, and as we grow on peat, the crop started rotting.
Put it down to experience/soil type/ neglect...but certainly not the cloves!!

Lovely creamy, sweet mild variety too

Thanks all. I am still in my first 6 months and the people on my allotment are not into growing garlic and other herbs.

OH planted loads last weekend, He got bulbs from Edwin Tuckers, they seem to have a good selection. We've had a couple of frosts already so hopefully we should have a good crop.

I planted mine the first week in Nov and the shoots are 3" long already. I planted cloves in a planter last year and the bulbs were TINY!

Just split the bulb into cloves and plant as if they were seeds. It's cheeper to get the bulb from the green grocers and you can still get excellent results. But seed companies have more varieties for you to choose from.

Wild garlic is delicious and doesn't give you smelly breath. Onion and wild garlic soup is yum

I bought some garlic from the local garden centre and also some from Marshalls Seeds. Both lots have real bad rust. The same thing happened last year and we ended up pulling it up early. It was still edible. Does anyone know how to stop rust on garlic?

I think the only way to help is to spray with a fungicide. Rust is an air borne spore and infected leaves should be removed and burnt. Wet leaves don't help so always water from the base (I know we can't do anything about the rain!).

To be quite honest I don't like the sound of some fungicides that have been recommended on the web so I have read The RHS Plant Pathology Advisory Leaflet for this year and Westlands Plant Rescue Fungus Control Concentrate is recommended for rust but it must be the concentrate not the ready to spray which is only for flowers.

Podington Direct, Online Garden Centre for Plant Rescue Fungus Control Concentrate 2 x 100ml

Our garlic had terrible rust last year and this year is the same. I don't like to spray so we have left it and last years garlic lasted until March. The bulbs were small but it was fine to use. This year will be the same although some of the bulbs are bigger then last years.
