Red face When to plant Chicory

I've just joined this Forum, so a 'newey' and at last managed to get hold of some chicory seeds (what the French call endive!!) and wonder when is the best time to plant them, presumably in a heated propagator at this time of year? Do hope someone can advise me - can I plant them this autumn? We just love the slightly bitter flavour when cooked.

Hi Gilly G. and welcome to our forum!!

Which variety are the seeds for? Chicory seeds should be sown in June and July and Endive seeds in April through to August. The seeds don't need a heated propagator and can be sown direct into the ground. If you are growing chicory to force then the seeds need to be sown in May and June. It all depends on the variety.

Smile When to plant Chicory?

Hi Lesley,
Many thanks for the information on when to grow chicory, and thanks for the welcome too!! - the seeds are for leaf chicory, Rossa di Treviso 2 - Italian seeds,by Franchi. I found the planting instructions on the packet a bit confusing, but I'll keep them safe and plant next June as you advise.

Just been looking at the Franchi seeds site and they have a great selection of Chicory. Rossa Di Treviso 2 is classed as radicchio (what is the difference?). Sowing dates are June to August and harvest dates are October to mid December.

Thumbs up When to plant chicory?

Thanks Rosemary - I have bought and eaten radiccio to use uncooked in salads, and now looking at the picture on the seed packet I see that it does look uncannily like radiccio - but hopefully it can be eaten cooked as well, like the chicory we have bought in our local farm shop.
