Default Tomato help.

Hello everyone, first time poster and novice vegetable grower here (in fact i haven't even started yet).
Im trying to find the variety of tomato from Spain that you always get in the hotel buffets, and can it be grown in the Uk.

You can grow any tomato variety here, but some grow better in greenhouses.

Next time you go over there bring some seeds back - just squeeze them out of a tomato.

Paul.

Can you describe it in detail; shape, size, colour, taste?

Hi Thomas.

They are usually sliced, but they are red with what looks like on the outside to be streaked with green ie not fully ripe but really sweet and tasty and i cant get enough of them when im in Spain. I haver never seen them in England, They are about the size of a beef tomato.

I'm pretty sure it's not illegal to bring some seeds back. Just squeeze the seeds into a small container (a 35mm film canister is ideal.) When you get home either plant the seeds immediately, or google 'saving tomato seeds' for info about how to save them dried out over the winter.

Next time you visit Spain, why not just find a gardening shop and buy a packet of seeds?

Default Tomato Seed Facts

Here is a good article on different tomato varieties.

Growing tomatoes - varieties. I believe the ‘San Marzano’ and ‘Orange Bourgain’ are good varieties for warm climates. I have had good success with both these but I live in UK.

I love the San Marzano Nano, great for soup and you get such a lovely big crop.

Hi all,

Tomatoes grown from seeds taken from a fruit will not be the same as the original tomato.

You must grow from a named variety of seed to reproduce the original fruit.

I'd say you will certainly need to grow a spanish variety in a greehouse in the UK. Have you found out the name yet? It would certainly help to find this out.

if you are to germinate these seeds wash in washing up liqiud first as they have a germination in hibitor arround the seed

defra will probalble say it is illegal to introduce a non native species as they can become invasive but who will expect a tomatoe to be like invasive

i expect the spanish variety can be found in spanish seed catalogus

Toms aren't indigenous to Britain anyway I'm growing black cherry and brandywine pink this year.

I'm trying 2 this year that are new to me. Harzglut - apparently very fast-growing and, out of sheer curiosity, Sub arctic plenty - a US air force variety created for difficult climates!
