Default raised bed height

morning all,
here goes with the first of a thousand questions i have, sorry its another raised bed one...

What is the required height for home made 4ft and 3 ft sqr wood beds? other posts advise 30cm, does it depend on veg to be grown?
I intend using 150mm decking, would this be too shallow on its own? They will be going on top of lawned area.
Should i line the boxes with a suitable membrane do they really help?

Did search other postings for answers but no luck.

Thanks for reading, only another 999 to ask

Gary

12" is a good depth, mine are 18" and making gardening much easier for me, I also have membrane on the bottom because the ground was covered in nettles and brambles I then bark chipped the lot

I'll sort the photos out and upload them. It took me 12months of hacking through the wilderness and clearing it
