Default Am i too late for Organic Matter?

Hi all,

As a way of introduction, I have just brought my first home and want to create my own organic veg garden. I am new to the forum and gardening for myself (although i did work 3 years in a garden centre when i was younger, so do have some background knowledge) so I will need as much help as possible.

I have been reading a few books on creating an organic veg patch and they all state that i should have been digging in organic matter and fertiliser during the winter months... not possible in my case. So... Am i too late for organic Matter now?

If so, what should i do to my soil to enable me to grow on it this year? if not then shall i do as the books say i should have done in winter, now?

Sorry if this is a stupid questions.... but everyone needs to start their learning somewhere.

Thanks in advance and really appreciate any advice i can get!!

Ian

Spreading organic matter in the winter months is the ideal as the elements and worms help to break it down further before you start planting. However, personally I rarely actually achieve this and mine is dug in in early spring and it generally works fine for me. As long as your organic matter is well rotted you should be fine if you do it now.

As long as your garden is already dug, you can use the manure/compost as a mulch when planting.
