Default Shady Advice ???

Shady corner in the garden, hedges on two sides, under a silver birch, quite possibly north-ish facing.
Had some spuds out of it last year, any ideas what would be better in that spot?

Have heard that 'roots anf fruits' need the most light, and shouldn't go in the shade, buuuuut the taters did OK (not amazing, but OK) last time out.

Considering onions/shallots/garlic, spinach might be OK but it's slugtastic. Will get going on an asparagus trench this season too, and though I've heard they're OK in shade, since it's going to be a long-term exercise, I'd rather find a sunnier spot for best results.

Thoughts anyone?

I grow wild garlic under my trees. It makes a lovely potato and wild garlic soup

We used to have bales of straw spiked with mushrooms underneath the fruit trees in the orchard. They were a hit and a miss sometimes, but then they never got too much attention.
