Default What should I put in my new veg patch?

Hi all

My first time to this site, so please bear with me.

I have just created a new vegetable patch, having recently moved house.

The area is 12ft by 5ft, and is filled with all the right soils to hopefully make anything planted grow. It isnt in the shade so should get plenty of sun, etc.

Basically, I've not had a veg patch before and just want to know how to fill my space as effectively as possible.

Ultimately, its a bit of fun for us and the kids. Everyday veg would probably do, rather than anything too ambitious.

Given the space that I have, what would be the best veg to plant? How many different types should I try to grown given the limited space? Which are the easiest, with the highest yields?

Any help would be MASSIVELY appreciated!!

Best, Scott

I wouldn't be without mangetout. They are really easy to grow and cost so much in the shops.

Scott, I wouldn't be without climbing french beans - Blue Lake is my favourite variety as they are easy to grow, self pollinating and give a good harvest. Also courgettes are a must but these are big plants so I grow one plant per container which needs to be at least 10 inches or 25cms in diameter and 12 inches or 30cms deep. The more you harvest the courgettes and the more courgettes the plant produces! Defender is my favourite variety and two plants will produce loads of courgettes. Try my recipe for Courgette Frittata:-

If I had one bed 12'x5'. Firstly 1'x5' would be used for some kind of bean/pea. That leaves 11'x5'. I would put a 1' path down the middle giving me 2 beds of 2'x11'. Using the square foot method, that would give me 44 beds, 22 each side of the path. You could grow anything you wanted in each of the beds. ie 16 spring onions, 9 leeks, 4 beetroots, 4 lettuce. Let your imagination run. As you said it's a bit of fun & you could give the kids there own beds.
