This is my first year with a vegetable garden. I dug the plots 4 weeks ago so they should be ready to go. But with the cold weather, I'm not sure if I should start planting. One book I have recommends planting the following in early spring: broad beans, carrots, potatoes, radishes, peas, salad onions and onions in early spring. Is this weekend a good time to plant? Are there any other vegetables I can plant now?

Carrots, pots, onions and radishes are OK to go in now. I put some leeks in already, and shallots/garlic/onions.
Not sure about the other stuff you mention - someone else can maybe answer that bit? I'm planning on trying out a cloche this year, which should mean I can get someother things in a bit sooner (am thinking cauli/cabbage seedlings). Hope this helps! |

You can sow your Broad Beans now as they are hardy they can be sown outdoors in autumn and left over winter and they give you a slightly earlier crop. I sowed half of mine last autumn and sowed the other half two days ago so your fine to put them in.
