Default Compost for seed sowing

What is the best type of compost to use for sowing seeds? This year I have used Levington Potting Compost and sieved it, but I think it is too dense and not draining. It is staying quite moist and moss is growing on the surface.

I always use a multi purpose compost.

IIRC levingston do a specific 'seed' compost, although generally speaking, all they will have done is add sand to and then sieve the multi-purpose stuff

i'd just back off the watering slightly.

I think the problem with the Multi Purpose for seeds is that it has a water retention substance added to it, hence the soggy problem. I have bought some Levington Seed Compost which looks much better for drainage.

No, it`s the POTTING compost you used that has the water granules. Multi purpose is fine for seeds, that is why it`s called MULTI purpose.

In fact I was mistaken, it was Multi Purpose I used. It states on the bag suitable for Beds & Borders, Hanging Baskets, Pots & Tubs. Nothing about seeds. I have used it for seeds for some years but not that pleased with results. It also says that it absorbs 25% more water which is why some of my trays are slimey and a little soggy. I am now trying Levington Seed Compost and it looks much better and is not holding onto so much water.
