Default Seed Advice

Hi,
I'm new to growing vegatables and was wondering are there any difference between the cheap seeds and the more expensive ones, is it worth paying the extra or are the cheap ones just as good.

Many thanks
Neil.

Hi Neil, welcome to our forum!!

In my experience the difference between the two are the germination rates. I have bought seeds from various seed merchants and some have poor germination rates - I have had entire packets of seeds where not one seed germinated. I like Thompson & Morgan seeds and I usually get 100% germination from their seeds.

But........that doesn't mean that all 'cheap' seeds are poor! There are alot of new seed merchants offering bargain packets of seeds and really the only way to tell if their seeds are any good is to try some.

Thank you for that, I was looking at the Wilkinsons ones at the moment they are 3 for £1.50 or the Johnsons ones ranging from £1.95 each.

Thanks
Neil.

Good evening Neil and welcome to the site. I`ve used seeds from Wilkinsons and found them as good as any. Though you do tend to get less seeds per pkt, hence the cheaper prices.

Got to agree with davidT on that one but then again who needs 5000 parsley seeds.
As for the stuff with not enough seeds just buy 2 pks simples as they say

saves trying to save seeds till next year with the price of cheaper ones!!!!!!

The very first tomatoes I grew myself were from Johnsons seeds and every single seed germinated - all 40 of them!! I gave loads to my fellow allotmenteers. That was a great year for making tomato soup!!
