... In work you have a really cool Batman mug for coffee, and a colleague has one that says 'I'd rather be in the Garden' and you covet his mug....

You sit out (on a warm day obviously! If we ever get one this year) and you have to get up and pull the weeds you can see. But it does make the wine last longer

when you watch a movie and notice a great garden but miss the dialogue.

We were watching "It's Complicated" last week (very funny incidentally) and Meryl Streep has this fantastic veg garden, loads of raised beds and veg going great

A guy my OH used to work with had a beautiful garden, stuffed full of great plants....................he always took a penknife with him on his frequent visits to the garden centres and always came back with a pocket full of cuttings!!!

When I was training, we were told that taking a plant from a garden centre was theft but taking cuttings was pruning.. Having been a g c plant area manager, I now think that BOTH scenarios are theft.

When you start talking to the spiders instead of running from them!

You too, Kim? I even tell the worms to move before they cut in half.

Sounds familiar David! Spent ages having to avoid planting things when I discovered a slow-worm living on the patch I'd allocated to strawberries! Gardening has definitely sorted out my lifelong avoidance of creepies cos now I'll grab any critter that threatens my crops and talk to all of the friendly ones

Slow worms are a protected species, so you must be careful with them. I even kick slugs out of the way when mowing lawns so as not to turn them into jam.

Really? Well you learn something new everyday! I have at least one hiding in the long grass that I've been very careful with (he's like a little pet snake! Lol). Haven't seen slugs on the grass as yet but will try to be kind

Have you started feeding and talking to the robins yet, so that they follow you around the garden?

No robins in the garden yet. Hundreds of starlings, great tits, blue tits, blackbirds, sparrows and jackdaws tho. I have a baby starling that sings to me!

Just had a quick giggle at this thread! A few posts resonating with me!

Dirt under the finger nails and hard skin from double digging!
Singing to robins and tits!
Eyeing up neighbours shrubs!
Being outside until its too dark to see!

A few of my own:
  • Crockery in the garden from snacks and sandwiches eaten outside.
  • Never hearing the doorbell because Im always out the back.
  • My Swiss neighbours now hum along with the Archers theme. (I listen to R4 while gardening).
  • Contemplating Heath Robinson methods of getting compost home from the g/c when the car is in for a service! (Now, can I really liberate a tesco shopping trolley and wheel it up a hill with 3 x 90 ltrs of compost? )

Not running over snakes when you're mowing because you know they eat bugs out of the garden. Also, when you do go to bed, wondering just how many plants would fit in a bed the same size as the one you're laying in.

You wake up at 4am and decide that Googling for an answer to your veg problems is more important than sleep. Having discovered the problem (in my case, leaf miners ) you're out in the garden at 5am trying to sort it out before going to work!

For me.. as a very new gardener, I was so pleased when some people (a good 20 years older than me) asked ME for gardening advice.

Before I knew it I was reeling off some names of plants and knew that what they thought was Rhubarb is in fact Burdock!
