Default Cucumber from seed

Hiya All!

I hope someone can help me. This year has been our first attempt at growing veg from seed (in fact doing any kind of gardening).

We have sown a range of seeds all seem to have done well so far. the Cucumber seems to be suffering a little though.

I sowed seed initially in little plastic propergators which sprouted up nicely. I thgen re-potted them a couple of weeks ago as they were too big for the cells. Since then, although watered regularly, some of the leaves went a little crispy and yellowed. I was told to pinch any "under developing" leaves out, but they still look a bit sad and unlike the tomoatos and some other veg, they don't seem to have done alot in the past couple of weeks.

Oh and they are in my conservatory - so nice and warm!

I have attached some pics, so any suggestions would be very much appreciated!

Hollie that is water damage, the white marks are scorching caused by water on the leaves acting like a magnify glass for heat and/or sunshine. Greenhouse Cucumbers HATE being wet, let the soil dry out a bit. Next time they need watering, stand the pots in a bowl of water rather than watering from the top.

Hi David,

Thanks so much for your reply. Unfortunately all the cucumber plants died I left them for a week to see if they would come back but it was too late for them.

Cucumbers, commonly called "cukes", are a favorite garden vegetable. Most gardeners grow at least one variety, if not more. Although quite susceptible to insect and disease problems, they are easy to grow. They are also prolific producers.

Cucumbers are vining plants, members of the Cucurbita family which includes pumpkins, squash, and gourds. They grow best when allowed to sprawl along the ground in your garden. This is because secondary roots will develop along the vine at the junction between the vine and the leaf. Secondary roots are a source of additional nutrients for your plant and fruits' growth.

If you have limited space, cucumbers are very successfully grown in a small space by training them up a fence or trellis. If a trellis or fence is your only choice, go for it. You will not be disappointed.

Fresh cucumbers are great on vegetable trays with dip, sliced or in salads.

We grow cucumbers in the greenhouse on the allotment. The seeds are sown in a heated propagator at home early March. Potted on when established into 7" plastic pots for growing on on the greenhouse bench. As cucumbers do not like to be disturbed we cut the bottom off the pots and plant the whole thing in the greenhouse border early May and grow the plants up canes. Use female varieties to avoid pinching out the male flowers. Hope you may find some of this useful.

It is a perfect information that clears all my doubts and gives a clear idea regarding that. It is really advantageous for me.I would definably take the benefit of it.
