Smile My Square-foot-ish Veg Patch!

In March, we decided to make a veg patch in our garden but taking up some patio slapbs, around 2x8 slabs in size.

We dug out... ok my Husband dug out, lots of the big stones and things, edged it with some old bricks we found behind the shed and filled it with nice new compost. Srpinkled the seeds..... Here's it's progress:

Day One:

April

By May, everything was shooting up so quickly. This is some difference from the start of May to end of May:

Oh thanks... I was going to say guys... David and Lesley! Im really pleased with it and also surprised that it has been less work than expected!

We do need to sort out some more supports for the peas to climb up. I make a big boo-boo with the peas aswell and starting pinching off the flowers as I thought it would encourage growth - I now know not to do that with them, tee hee!

The Veg Patch Update!

I have no idea where all this growth has come from! Last night when I checked on the veggies before bed time I am sure, 100% that there were no pods on the peas... today loads of them! Im just SO excited!!! What do you all think...

The Patch itself:

Wowsers! You're doing amazingly well. I want to post pics too but I'm on a smartphone so can't! My stuff has gone bonkers too - especially my broccoli which is bursting out of the raised beds.

Keep the pics coming!

Nice Holly!

Well done....in a small space its good to grow upwards!! Try using bean poles for peas and runner beans....in my small space I put them together...as long as there is sufficient depth for the roots to grow and spread that would be fine!

Thanks everyone! I am really pleased with the results, especially with my peas! There is nothing I like more than that "pop" sound pea pods make when you open them!

My Mum is ever so jealous, she loves peas too. She lives in the States so will miss the harvest. I wonder how the pods would bear up if I froze them whole?!

My bet is that they'd go really squishy on defrosting

Yeah that's what I thought, but I could try just one and maybe freeze a handful of podded ones anyway

If you've got loads then try one but I'd probably just de-pod them all and freeze the peas. Keep 'em fresh - am well jealous (maybe next year!)

I hope I have loads! I know we will have one less pod than we would have... my husband David decided that he would eat it whole and when I caught him at it he shouted out "Mange Tout"!

Hi Hollie, freeze the fresh, tasty peas that are surplus by blanching first in boiling water for one minute, then drain and immediately plunge into ice cold water containing ice cubes. Drain as much water off as possible, then freeze. With the pea pods make Pea Pod Wine!!!

Well, here is the recipe Hollie:-

It sounds good though making wine out of pea pods that are normally thrown away!

I am fully depressed. Your veg patch looks AMAZING!!! My carrots (in 30" by 18 " by 18" deep boxes, and thinned accordingly) are still tiny little seedlings! (am in Cumbria...??)
Well done, you're veg look fabulous!

*is also jealous*

I'm going for sugar-snap peas (instead of peas) again this year, but they're only just going again after the seedlings were accosted by birds

Once you spot one or two pods you 'get your eye in' and recognise quite how many there are!

Looking good!

Oh thanks so much for all your kind comments! I think we have been lucky or something, this is the first time we've tried to grow anything and although a few things died, most stuff seems to do well... especially when I know things like the carrots and peas were not planted according to their instructions!

Thanks again!!! I'm in Reading Daisy - and our soil down here is awful so I have had to use lots and lots of compost in my patch!
