My pumpkins were like that to begin with Pacey - first flower was a female - no males to pollinate
then a few male flowers and no females, then a female and two males so I hand pollinated and something ate it after about 2 weeks ![]() Somebody told me that it is possible to freeze the male stamens and use them to hand pollinate the female flowers when they appear. I have no idea if this is true though ![]() Does anyone know if I should dead head the pumpkin flowers when they've finished? Does that encourage more flowers? ![]() |

Following advice from my grandad and you all, I have pinched out some of the other smaller pumpkins and concentrated on two big boys!
This was taken last week. Both are on the patio so not on soil but I am still worried they will rot or something. Should I be doing anything to prevent rot or damage etc? I want these all ready for Halloween! ![]() Last edited by Hollie the Wollie; 21-03-2011 at 07:13 PM. |

Leave the fruit to mature and harden off into October. Winter squash only develop their full sweetness and taste when allowed to mature and harden off. When the foliage starts to die down, cut off the fruits leaving if possible, at least 5 cm stem attached, to help to prevent early rotting of the fruit. Leave the cut fruits to fully dry off in a sunny dry place, such as a greenhouse, cold frame or sunny windowsill for two weeks.
