hi, hope someone can advise me. I picked my first ever green pepper yesterday and when I tasted it, it was so bitter! I had to throw it. Was it not ripe enough to eat??? How do you know when they can be picked? thanks very much

Depending on the variety, green peppers will change colour when they are ripe to red or yellow or brown etc. You have picked them for too early. At the end of the season, you may have some green ones still. Place these in a sunny window and they will ripen.

Yes, green peppers are unripe. They have not had time to develop their real taste.

What kind of size was it? I found if they havent reached there full size they are bitter and sometimes the skn can be like leather.
Didn't get a ripe one last year but at the end of season had about 15 large green ones and about 6 smaller ones whch were awful tasting.

Remember that green peppers ripen quite easily after picking at the end of the season by placing them on a sunny windowsill.

If you can find the seeds you might try these giant marconi peppers. They are sweet and mild when green, and really sweet when they are red. We roast or fry them and they are fantastic.
