Default Replanting

Not sure what you call it but I sowed a number of seeds and now I think some of them are too close. I think I made the mistake of putting a few seeds down together. I thought they would grow into one and other. Anyways I was thinking of digging them up and moving them.

Before you ask what I'm moving I'm not sure, the dog (puppy really) ate all the labels so now I can't remember what I planted and where! I think it's cabbage or lettuce might be carrots not sure.

Should I do it?
Is it the right time to do it, there are about 6 to 8 inches high?
Any tips on doing it?

Thanks
Jim

glad to know that someone else, apart from me, doesnt have a clue what they have planted and where it is! at a guess, if they are carots, they should be getting feathery leaves at about that hieght. if lettuce they will have a greener colour flat leaf, and cabbage has a paler but thicker leaf than lettuce. you dont have to move all of them, just thin them out to about 6 or 7 inches apart, maybe a bit more for the cabbage. you can replant the ones you have thinned out. i would try to get the trowel under several at a time, to deeper depth than the root, so you can then slide the whole lot that you are moving to make space between the plants that are staying in situ, including the soil, into its new place. then you can thin the newly placed plants later if you need, but there is a better chance of them surviving, than to do it individually. use a newspaper to put the plants you are moving onto, so you can move them easily, and then infill the holes you have made between the plants that are in the original spot. hope this makes sense. water the moved plants in, and keep them watered daily til they look happy in thier new home

Thanks that more or less what I thought. not sure what the leafs look like but I'll check at the weekend. If I'm still confused I might post some pictures of them and see if anyone can identify them.
