Default Raised beds...

Im looking into building a raised bed or two for my garden. Its turning out to be much more expensive than i imagined especially at the height i was wanting. I was hoping to build 1mx1m squares at about 12inches deep.

my post is asking whether i could go for say 8 inches deep and as they will be at the bottom end of my lawn take the turf off then turn over the soil underneath. would this give the depth required for things like carrots??

Tell me about it! I saw the prices of the wooden bars I wanted and they're way more expensive than I thought......

Try asking someone on freecycle for wood they might have lying around. My partner built ours with old sleepers and its perfect.

Lisa are you sure that old sleepers are safe to use? The ones I ever saw here in Italy are often very much soaked in tar!

These ones are ok. They were off a building site not a railway line.

I built my raised beds very cheaply and though theyre not much to look at they do the job

sorry about the colour -my camera is playing up. Essentially I put the boards up, bang in some old bits of pipe on the outside and use the soil to hold the boards up on the inside. perhaps not the most professional of jobs but quick, cheap and suprisingly long lasting

We bought dung boarding from the local Mole Valley each large bed cost us £30.
I hope I have attached a picture

My bed is only 6 inches deep no problems growing anything so far, carrots fat and long, large onions, lots of cabbage, lettuce, parsnips coming on awesome along with a few other bits and bobs cant think of any issues but mine was also put on top of double dug soil that i had took the turf off.
I want to build another two beds by next year but im also having issues with pricing :O lol
You will be surprised how much it takes to fill them as well :/ lol
Good luck

Hiyatim have you tried ringing around any local scaffolding companies for boards?

They have been known to sell off those boards that are no longer safe to use and as long as you can pick them up they should be fairly cheap.

Hi,

You should be able to buy 200mm x 47mm pressured treated timber for about £2.30 a metre. You will also require material to peg it, but again it shouldn't cost too much.

I'm fortunate enough to work with wood for a living, so my raised bed system hasn't perhaps cost me as much as it would have done otherwise. I finished the last one just yesterday.

Eddie that is one great layout you've got there. Can I ask a few questions?

What is the total growing area?

How wide are your walkways?

and finally, what are the things growing in the bottom right hand bed in the first picture?

Regards

WW

Thanks WW, I guess that I should really start my own thread for this, but just to answer your questions.. Sorry for the thread de-rail hiyatim.

The total growing area is approx 70 square metres.

The inner pathways are 700mm wide and teh outer ones 900mm wide.
The pathways are finished with terram and Fittleworth stone.

And finally the things growing in the white tubes are my brussel sprouts.
This is my first venture into veg growing, and after looking at other peoples 'eaten' crops I figured that I would try and protect mine while they were young. I've left them on, as they seemed to be so effective.

Eddie, thats one great layout you have created there. What composition of soil did you add? Looks like you have massive rain water storage?

You're right - should create a thread
