Default Xmas spuds

Hi Everybody

We planted spuds (Nicola & Charlottes) in re-used recycling tubs so we can have new spuds at Xmas.

Now the reason for the post is that I have just read on another site (Yes I know, shame on me ) that these should actually be in a greenhouse otherwise the first frost will kill them off.

Is the right?

We don't have a greenhouse big enough to hold them

Hoping for help

WW & Nix

Fraid so! This is why there have been so many moaning (albeit on another forum ) as to why they have had such a poor potato harvest.

Maybe you could try overing them, when there is frost likely.
Get some garden fleece and wrap it around the plant bag and all.
Or just try some bed linen. I heard my neighbour once arguing, because he used the freshly ironed flat sheets to cover fruit trees during cold nights in spring to protect the buds. I didn't dare asking if t worked

Default Earthing up puds

Mine were very successful last year, despite frost and heavy snow. I have one of those tall plastic "victorian" style potato barrels just outside the kitchen door. I think the volume of compost helps insulate from the frost.
Plant seed pots near bottom and earth up until they reach the top. Nice to dig up fresh spuds on Christmas morning! I have tried other containers but this always gives the best crop.
Best of luck
