What is it that causes tomatoes to split?

Usually it's caused by infrequent watering. The fruits swell when watered after a dry spell and the skin splits. The best way to avoid this is regular watering, but not drowning! I found the nest way to grow them is by what the call Ring Culture. I grew mine in big coffee tins with the bottom cut out and laid in trays of gravel. You water the gravel and the plant only takes up what it needs.

Hope this helps?

Thanks. I am growing ring culture on grow bags. I slit the grow bags about 2cm from the bottom so they dont drown and have them on auto watering. They certainly havent dried out.

Some of my toms have split, or their "lids" have split... but Ive been careful when watering them to do it regularly each day
