Usually it's caused by infrequent watering. The fruits swell when watered after a dry spell and the skin splits. The best way to avoid this is regular watering, but not drowning! I found the nest way to grow them is by what the call Ring Culture. I grew mine in big coffee tins with the bottom cut out and laid in trays of gravel. You water the gravel and the plant only takes up what it needs.
