Default Beetroot

First time growing it this year ... superb results, form leaves, baby beets and for past 2 months grapefruit sized beets.
Taste is excellent - no hint of woodiness.

I followed advice of putting salt on rows when shoots first appear ... nothing other that that.

I have about 20 left in the ground ... my wife thinks she heard on TV that you should now pull beetroot up before any frost arrives to avoid splitting.

Is this correct ? ......... also we have been pulling and cooking within 5 mins .... if they are pulled how long will they keep before use ? do I top & tail them, store in dark ???

I pulled the last 5 of mine 2½ months ago and put them in the bottom vegetable drawer of the refrigerator - they are still fine.
(I topped them before storage.)

Actually we still have some in the ground now. But will be pulling them up shortly.

Why do you put salt along the rows ? Is it to keep slugs etc away ?
