OK, so it's 0 degrees outside (if I'm lucky that it's that warm!) and I'm feeling sorry for my overwintering veg. I've got celeriac, onions and garlic at the moment. I'm not so worried about the aliums but I'm very worried about my celeriac as it looks like it's frozen. A colleague told me not to bother putting fleece over it but was he right? Snowy celeriac is not a good thing in my book and the ground is probably so frozen that I won't be able to dig it up (even though I've been planning to leave it in the ground until Feb).
Any advice? |

If you can lay your hands on some easily, put a layer of straw around the celeriac plants, that should insulate them against any frost damage. This is the way that commercial veg growers protect their carrots/parsnips from the winter conditions, we currently have a field of carrots buried under 12-18 inches of straw for that reason
