Why have my stored onions spoiled?

Hi All - I stored my onions exactly the same way as last year but most of them have 'gone' already!
I let them dry completely in the conservatory and then hung them in old stockings with a knot inbetween each onion. We then hung them in the wooden shed.
Most of them have gone all soft. Gutted - any ideas what could have gone wrong?

Hi Dolly,
Sounds to me as though your onions have got frosted in the wooden shed. Storage area must be dry and cool but frost free. Hope this helps.

It certainly was cold in the run up to Christmas - I guess that must be the problem - thank you
