Default Growing tomatoes from haging baskets

Hi there

Does anyone have any advise on going about using hanging baskets to grow tomatoes??

I have a nice warm wall but am not sure what I need to plant the toms in and what type of toms that I need to use to grow??

Any advise gratefully accepted.

SG

Hi StevieG,

you'll need a tumbling variety for growing in hanging baskets, I could be wrong but I think they you would usually only grow cherry tomatoes in hanging baskets. There's a variety called Hundreds and Thousands or one called Tumbling Toms I think. Hanging baskets can dry out quite quickly in hot weather so it might be worth getting some of those water retaining gel granules to mix in with the soil.

Good luck!

Nicola

If you get larger baskets you could put a couple of plants in. Watering and feeding is important. Tumbling ones are ideal but there are a few in seed catalogues that can be used.

Hi again,

I was in a garden centre today and noticed they had loads of packets of tomato seeds that it said were suitable for hanging baskets, so you should be able to find some quite easily. Hope you let us know how you get on.

the amount of nutrients and water retention of the compost in hanging baskets is always critical for most plants particularly so for tomatoes . normal potting compost will have a nutrient level of about 4 weeks and if it is not a peat based one the water retention of a sieve so you will need to add additional bulk to hold moisture and this will in turn reduce the compost levels and nutrient available . i would suggest that you cut down a 2 litr plastic bottle and fill it each time with a liquid fertilizer but you will need to flush the basket with plain water occasionally as salts build up in the compost

In the past two years i have used a variety called supersweet 100. They produce masses of fruits per plant and are ideal for hanging baskets! They do benifit from a good watering and feed, especially in dry spells. I normally plant two per hanging basket of compost with good water retaining qualities, and use westlands Nutri feed tomato, this is also good for lots of other veg too!
