Default Confusion over when to start sowing seeds...

Hi all! I had a bit of success last year growing some veggies so thought I'd get more into it this year and invest in a greenhouse and get started earlier (I only just made it last year!!) but am a bit confused as to whether it's ok to start sowing seeds such as tomatoes, strawberries, peppers etc in feb in the greenhouse? The packet instructions say to sow tomatoes and strawberries indoors in jan and peppers and a few others in feb so I was going to make a start this week but notice a few comments on here about not starting too earlier... I'm confused! Can someone advise the best time to start sowing please? Many thanks!!

hey roo-b-loo! thats always the way with seed packets!! they're not always as clear as you want them to be. As you've got a greenhouse it's a great way to start things off earlier than normal, as long as it's kept frost free. Normally for tomatoes they are planted in mid-Feb if you're going to grow them on in the green house or ealry-March if they're going to be planted out! I personally don't grow them in the greenhouse as they take over if not kept under control! Peppers are best started in the warm as they need a highish temp of about 21 and above to germinate, so then move them into the greenhouse and i would normally plant mine now but running a bit behind! With strawberry i haven't had much luck from seed so can't help you with that one!! But atm with the unpredictability with the weather i would sugest starting seeds indoors for best germination rate in somewhere warm like an airing cupboard or on top of a boiler then when big enough moving to your greenhouse!
I planting them indoors isn't an option then insulating your greenhouse with bubble wrap (you can probably get a kit from your local garden centre for £15) is a good solution and works as i do this with mine!!
The best advice I can give you is to get yourself a cop of 'Alan Titchmarsh The Kitchen Gardener'. It's by far the best gardening book I have ever read!
Hope this helps!!
