I have done exactly the same as I did last year put them in an egg tray and stood them on the windowsill
Any ideas?

Its nothing to worry about, some varieties will have black shoots on them when they first appear but they will become green in the end.

Out of interest, what varieties do you have?

Chits from Rooster potatoes are also black / dark purple.

White chits mean they're not getting enough sun.

The things we learn!

The grocery store. Any potato can be planted.Buy a variety you like (though, admitedly, the grocery usually carries only 2-3 kinds), then cut them into chucks that have 2-3 "eyes" per piece. Plant as usual.

I too had black ones come through at first, however this seemed more prominent when they were left in their airated plastic packs than when I took them out and placed them in a cardboard box.
