I planted some garlic sets (from Wilkos) in a raised bead previously used to grow onions, freshening up the compost. The shoots have come through, even though covered for a long time by snow during the winter. They are about 3 to 4ins. long. However the tips have gone brown.
Is this a problem? If so is there anything I can do to salvage? Cheers |

They probably will be ok, as mine did the same after we had snow! It would be good to give them a feed to try and improve their growth.
If they do start to develop red/rust coloured powdery spots, then this is rust! This is untreatable and it will shorten the growing period of your plants. You can still leave them to grow until the leaves completely die off but you wont be able to plant garlic, onions or leeks in that position, or near it, for at least two years. |

I think they will be okay, mine have a gone a little brown following the snow, but it is the third year I have planted them and I have done very well with them before, infact they have loved this really wet winter

You would be surprised at how mild garlic is after it's roasted. When the bulb/head is cooked, the cloves squeeze out nice and soft - you can mash them with a fork. Mix the mashed garlic in with your mashed potatoes, or into butter for a flavored spread for Garlic Bread.
