Default Covering onions sets.

I was planning to plant my onion and garlic sets today and I have a couple of questions. Last night there was a slight frost and I know there will be more to come. The bed where I am going to plant them has been dug over and covered with plastic for a few days.

Is it ok to plant the sets while there is still the threat of a frost.

Should I cover the beds afterwards with the plastic to stop the frost affecting the sets, or would this be detrimental. I've noticed condensation on the underside of the plastic - would that damage the sets?

Many thanks, Tom.

Yes, it is OK to plant them now... they like a bit of frost. You can cover them with fleece if you think they will have a particularly hard frost.

plant shallots now do not use fleece as i have found it retards growth rather than promotes it it seems to hold too much wet in the centres . plant sets in trays and plant out later i have found fleece not to be beneficial for onions . if i use fleece i lift it about 2 inches off the crops as i think wet fleece can hold lower the temp around seedlings and keep them wet and airless
do not use solid plastic unless they are structured as a cloche
