Help !

I have sown my Onion Sets a few days ago but i have since read that you should leave the tips showing. I planted them and covered with about half an inch of loose soil. Will they be O.K.

Help appreciated.

Regards Hammer.

Hi Hammer. I think you'll be fine. That's the way I use to plant onions for years, until I found out about leaving the tips exposed, and they did just fine. I'm told the reason for the shallow planting is so the onions will get bigger but if you've only got loose soil over the top I think you won't see much of a difference. Good luck gardening.

They'll be fine. They just take a little longer to pop through. Just leave them.

They won't hold it against you...honestly

It's a good job vegetables don't have the same hang-ups as people isn't it...
They just grow whether we do it right on wrong. One year my husband planted some upside down!! No problem for the onion... it just grows to the light at a strange angle

onion sets that are planted with the tips showing often get pulled up by birds so plant just below does no harm
the size is not affected by this planting
planting too ealy in cold ground often sets back sets about 2 weeks
best planted in cells and planted out from there
will need feeding to give bigger bulbs however the bigger the bulb the weaker the flavour i keep mine to the size of a billiard ball approx

I have some netting over the top of my bed (and three cats) to keep the birds off - actually the netting is the keep the cats off and the cats keep the birds off

some little shoots have appeared from my onions, garlic and radishes

The instructions on my packet of "Taylors Bulbs" Red Baron onion sets says to "plant the sets 3cm/1 inch deep"

So does that mean 1 inch of soil on top or in a one inch hole? The sets are longer than one inch, so more than just the tip will show if planted in a one inch hole.

I planted them with an inch of soil on top. We'll see what happens, but next time I'll make sure the tips show.

Ali.
