I have over wintered some savoy cabbages (my very first vegetables) in the front garden. We have already eaten two (yum yum) and the other 10 are just starting to form proper heads BUT there are little frondy things right in the centre of where the heads are forming... is this usual or is this the beginning of them bolting? and if so would removing the flowers help?
Please help.... I have been so excited about my first vegetable growing experience and hope its not all been in vain ![]() |

Savoys, bi-annuals, are for Winter eating and they will be going to flower this year. Pick the flower shoots and eat them as Spring greens.

I think that you could be picking the flower buds for a few weeks. Pick them before they turn yellow.

It's a good idea to pick the flower heads but you can't stop the bolting. Maybe you are better off to give some to friends and family.

I freeze my excess, after blanching.
